Petrol prices HAVE increased by 40% to RM 2.70. Inflation to rise from a current 3% to 5%, WITH petrol subsidies expected to be removed further in August. On another note, here is what I picked up from Lim Kit Siang's (Malaysian opposition leader for the DAP party) blog

“On Monday, 25th June 2007, Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC) staged a 14-location nation-wide picketing by thousands of workers after discussions with the government on its campaign for a minimum wage of RM900 a month and cost of living (Cola) of RM300 for private sector employees came to a deadlock.

“A week earlier, MTUC presented a seven-page memorandum to the Prime Minister asking for minimum wage and Cola for the private sector but did not elicit any appropriate response.

“According to an MTUC study, some four million out of the 10 million workers it represents are earning below the poverty line. Even in Johor Baru where cost of living is extremely high, industrial workers are paid as low as RM390. Even five-star hotels in Kuala Lumpur pay a basic wage of RM290 per month to cleaners and waiters.

Did I also mention to you that electricity prices have increased?

Najib quashes talk of petrol price increase

PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has brushed off speculation that petrol prices will increase by 40 sen following the government’s plans to restructure the subsidy system, including the petrol subsidy.

The Deputy Prime Minister said it was untrue and baseless, particularly when the Cabinet had not discussed subsidy restructuring at its weekly meeting yesterday.

“There's a lot of speculation and talk going around.

'But none of it holds water. The public should not listen to rumours,” he said.

DATUK Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said last week there would be no increase in the petrol price, since this was the wish of the people. The Prime Minister said his administration had accepted and recognised the strong message of voters as reflected in the result of the 2008 general election.

Prices of petroleum products, such as petrol, diesel and natural gas have always been associated with rising costs of consumers goods and, hence, an increase in the cost of living.

Pak Lah could have given this assurance during the election campaign but did not because the cost of fuel is dependent on the global price of crude oil, which is beyond the control of any government.

TOKYO: Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has called on Malaysians to change their lifestyle to reduce the impact of rising inflation.

The Prime Minister said he would encourage Malaysians to save more and reduce wastage to ease their burden.

“Some people may not think it is important but a change of lifestyle a little bit in times of difficulty is important,” he said in an interview with the Japanese media after attending the Nikkei International Conference here yesterday.

Abdullah was responding to a question on the possible need for a strong ringgit to offset inflationary pressures.

He admitted that Malaysia was facing a lot of difficulties but the Government was implementing aggressive measures.

“We are developing measures to respond to the inflation we are now experiencing. We have to increase productivity and be more competitive.

“We are also seeking cooperation with other countries in strategic areas like food and agriculture,” he added.

(TheChinaPost): MOSCOW -- Chief of the Russian Federal Space Agency, Anatoly Perminov, said Saturday that Russia may stop selling seats to tourists on its spacecraft starting in 2010 because of the planned expansion of the crew of the International Space Station (ISS).

Perminov said that the station's permanent crew was expected to grow from the current three to six in 2010, which would mean that Russia would have fewer extra seats available for tourists on its Soyuz spacecraft, Interfax news agency reported. U.S. company Space Adventures has reserved places on board the Soyuz spacecraft up to 2009, according to the reports. With Russia's cooperation, the company has already sent five tourists into space.

Space tourism has attracted a great deal of criticism in Russia with Vitaly Lopota, the president of the Energia space rocket corporation, saying that space was not a holiday destination. "Tourism is a forced activity. I am sorry, but we have built the ISS not for space tourists but for serving the needs of the people of Earth," Lopota was quoted by Interfax as saying.

In the future space tourism would only be offered by private companies, the reports said.

However, Perminov said that Russia would be in a position and willing to help private companies to implement similar programs. Millionaire space enthusiasts have paid up to US$40 million for trips into space.

In October 2008, computer games designer Richard Garriott, whose father was an astronaut, is due to travel into space.

Russia was celebrating Cosmonauts' Day Saturday when it marks the first manned flight into space.

In his congratulatory letter to those working in the space industry, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia was the first nation "to open the way to the stars to humanity."

Putin Friday announced that Russia's space program would be stepped up with the speed financing of a new cosmodrome in the Far East to help maintain the nation's leading role in space.

Fictional Reality wins something

I'm told Fictional Reality ( this blog) has won the consolation prize for the CJ7 Advertlets post that was featured sometime ago. For my readers who missed the post. Here it is again. CJ7 Adverlets competition post
Well, I had also the privilege to attend the press screening of CJ7 the other day compliments to our friends @ Advertlets. Took precious time off work and attended the session at 10am in the morning. Despite rushing for a paper to be completed for work and sleeping at 5am that morning, I got my sleep deprived frame off the bed at 9am and dragged my feet to MidValley. Grabbed a box of popcorn & sat down. Josh Lim from Advertlets leans over and tells me that the kid is actually a girl, and I m left with that thought stuck in my head the entire movie. Oh Well, before I leave you with some movieshots, allow me to say that CJ7 is worthwhile going to watch, the acting from the boy/ girl is excellent. Awards & Valentine suggestions

Many months ago, I thought of embarking on an art and craft project. Apt for that situation was doing a mug for a friend of mine. Of course, I didnt know head or tail of how to do it. Who did I turn to? Emila Yusof of course. I came across Emila's site through surfing the web a bit. I remember my 1st post on her website being:- I can never draw hair like that. Seriously, being one to dabble in art myself, I can never draw proper hair on cartoon characters. Anyways, I sought her advice and she replied immediately pointing me to the store at One Utama and the instructions how to paint and bake the mug accordingly. It turned out pretty well.

Following up from my previous post, I strongly encourage guys not to take the easy way out and buy flowers for your female companions, but to go all out to create something special. I'm sure your girlfriends will appreciate it much more; unless it looks like a whole lot of toilet paper glued together! Well, if you are not the artistic type. Try something else perhaps; ORIGAMI! Hand make a dozen Kawasaki roses ( Instructions below) and watch these babies melt ya hunnybunny faster than chocolate on your V6 engine.

By the way, while checking Emila's site today, I learnt that Fictional Reality has been awarded an "I love you very much award" in conjunction with Valentine's day.

Gee, thanks Emila; now thats something special. :)

The "selective" appointment of judges at the highest level in particular Tun Ahmad Fairuz 's position to the Chief Justice position through the brokerage of a V.K Lingam ,highlights not only the Executive's infringement over what is sacred in a democratic country; that is the independence of the tripartite pillars of government (Judiciary, the executive and the parliament); but also that anyone and anybody CAN be a judge in Malaysia provided you have money and contacts. Our forum is the mamak shop sipping teh tarik (* NOW MUST KURANG MANIS...) discussing why the official inflation rate has not seen a notch upwards when even our roti canai price has increased, apparently also BERSIH had 20,000 participants when the mainstream media stated 5000 only. How come?

This blogger remembers that he did an elective many years ago called INTERNATIONAL MARKETING. One of the many rules is to find out what your product name would mean in other countries...I mean, this would be obviously understandable if you had accidentally named your cosmetic product badly in an obscure language but seriously seriously, cant you at least try to cater for the ENGLISH speaking world. Come on! LAMER? GEEZ! Before anyone goes...duh! doesnt he know its LA MER not LAMER?
Allow me to ask you what is the difference if my product is called BO DOH, STU PID,
CR AP? I mean if it were, MIRACLE! or perhaps MOISTURE! (* Heck MIR ACLE or MOIST URE) Wouldnt that do wonders for descriptive marketing...oh! did I mention its a French product. :P

My mother has this knack of blending together lots of stuff and make me drink it. It may look like a mush of stuff, but seriously it tastes pretty not too bad... Here take a look @ it

wicked stuff eh! Sure beats the whimpy stuff you get from the shopping complexes! Honestly, dont cost that much as well, all you have to do is to get a blender, lots of different types of vege and blend it together. Now, dont be too creative about the object matters that you dump in. For example, I m telling mum. "MUM! here are the guidelines...please please dont blend in bitter gourd"

But seriously, from a health scale, wouldnt that be ultra wicked. That and brussel sprouts, and apple cider mixed in...totally wicked (* As you can see, I have been watching too much Jamie Oliver, totally overdosing the word wicked on this post)

Travel stories

Rummaging through my notebook, I found some pics I took last month while traveling around. Here are some of my favorites I felt I should share with you:-

"Pull your own sleigh fatboy"
on a tuktuk, Phuket Island
Santa dont take tuk tuks when he goes to Phuket. For good reasons! We took the cattle lorry (* oops I meant the bus; I crap you not! they look like cattle lorries) around the island for a beach hopping trip and on the way back one evening, decided that we were just too tired to lorry back to the hotel (* it was a good 2 hrs ride back. The damn lorry is slow & no thanks to my rational that we should blend into the culture, experience what the locals experience, sweat like they sweat in bus...and all that crap, we had undergone 2 hrs to get to Karon beach) Back to the story, we decided to take the tuk tuk back to the hotel, took us 30 mins to get back and when we arrived, the driver decided to overcharge us. Fingers were pointed, and voices were raised, but at the end we paid him a little under what he wanted and that was that.

Like all good Malaysians, we ask for CHILLI sauce when we go to a fast food joint. Waddled into Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta Airport's McDonalds and decided to order a meal. ' Chilli sauce ada tak?" ( Have you any chilli sauce?) I asked. The kind person reached below the counter and threw some of these on my tray. SAUCE SAMBAL!

"Thats new" I mused, and peeled off one thinking that it was the usual sweetened chilli sauce all Malaysians are accustomed to. The 1st thing I noticed was it was darker than usual, and it was salty to taste. They dont have chilli sauce in Jakarta McDonalds. They have SAMBAL! as in reeallll sambal.

This kid gave me grief for more than 3 hrs.

Seriously, the whole plane had to endure this kid's cry for like 3 freaking hrs on my way back from Jakarta. All the father did to placate him was to say " ok ok ". Cant understand how some kids can open their mouth and ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh for 3 hrs NON stop.

Amazing! I should hire this kid, stick him on a plane and make him go:-
"tohumuuusssnessssss.blooogggsppooott.coomm". Heck I bet by the time the plane lands, everyone would have heard of my blog and will probably dream of this kid chanting www.tohumusness.blogspot.com for the rest of their lives.

Sardines & Armpits

Swivel me with ketchup and stick me into a tin, I feel like a damn sardine. Its in the Malaysian genes, I blame it on our legacy from Kota Raya (* a long bus that I use to pay 30cents to take ride to school to) and Yellow MiniBus ( 50 cents, smaller more modern bus) days where conductors would shout " Masuk lagi Masuk Lagi" (* translated go in go in )when clearly the only room is to hang out on the bottom rung of the ladder with half of the body exposed to passing traffic.

In rhetoric, I was not exactly right. Like all things in life, the closer to God you are ; (* in the LRT, the aircond ducts), the more you will be aware that are evils at the bottom. Any tall person on the LRT would know that when a person who has not taken a bath for a day sticks his hair under your chin, it is akin to smelling a thousand armpits next to your nose.

I felt it is only appropriate to aid my fellow rail transport travelers by creating a small little sign that should attempt to deter the stinkos out there.

Kopi Luwak

I had the privilege of sampling "kopi luwak" the other day, google it and you will find that this is the infamous Crapacino that many have giggled about. For the sake of trying very hard NOT to plagiarize, I call it poopocino. Well these terms are not far from the mark, Kopi Luwak begins its journey from a civet cat, mostly found in Indonesia and some parts of the Philippines. These cats have a particular taste for coffee beans, which are of course at times difficult to digest. Now, as of all things difficult to digest, they will undergo a process which I concoct out of thin air called pooposynthesis. These berries or rather its core will be "ushered" out of the the cat's body through the motion of squatting down, scrunching it's face and WALLA! Out it comes.

It wasnt much aromatic as I had hoped it would be after having sampled much of San Francisco Coffee's Cable Car blend; which I would say is one of the most aromatic coffee blends around. But distinctly I would say that it scored well in its robustness and after taste which I though was...ahem ...

rather clean. I wonder why.

Was at One Utama; (a major shopping complex in Petaling Jaya a district off Kuala Lumpur to my international readers) over the weekend hanging out with the cousins. We walked into the Seed shop, and was rummaging in the bargain bins when I came across this T-shirt from Seed. I crap you not. Check out the spelling. SEED CORP ESTBLISHED SINCE 1990. Notice the "a" missing in Established. Prob why most companies just go for EST 1990.

She looked beyond the line, the evening dresses were out, tuxedos were hired a week in advance, clean shaven corporate folks chuckling nervously, a red faced overweight man with a cigar in his mouth laughing too loudly smacked a thinner man on his back, sending him forward hitting a waitress and spilling tall glasses with little umbrellas.

" Ready camera one" "Ready" " Ready lightsman" " Ready" ...The lights grew dim; the deafening chatter of the front row plus the shouts and screams from the back as one by one, television stars and musicians are recognized in front, display restlessness.

Spotlights began to move about, the chatter and screams grew to nervous giggles, a man in navy blue tuxedo moved to the rostrum in the corner and waited as the music began and as it soften he leaned closer to the mic; " Welcome to the Opening Event of the Decade!" The crowd roared. The back row chanted and jumped, led by a mysterious man with a tom bot T-shirt. The music started again, the front row stood up clapping, caught on to the back row chantings and screamed in unison.

" Fictional reality would like to present you, a night to remember; ITS ALIVE" the volume increased another notch, from the corner a string is pulled and the curtain drags its weight to the left, " ITS ALIVE" the announcer screamed.

Tiny bits of paper are released from the ceiling with gold balloons and spotlights swirling all around now. Its alive!
